HP Printer Class Action

Introduction

A proposed class action titled Renee Robinson et al. v. HP, Inc. alleges that HP deployed firmware or software updates that disabled printers if they detected non-HP cartridges, effectively locking customers into only using HP ink. Plaintiffs contend this practice amounts to unfair competition, breach of warranty, and deceptive trade practices. A federal judge recently dismissed the complaint for failure to plausibly allege that the blocking was a contractual condition of purchase—but allowed the plaintiffs to amend and refile.
